Mexican Resort Offers Getaway for Active or Sedate Vacationing

Rent a car, or hop in a cab, and head 30 kilometres on highway 200 north and you'll pass an impressive looking roadside Christian shrine (It's not hard to miss since it's the only structure for miles). A hundred metres past it look for a small sign reading "Troncones". Turn left down the red dirt road and follow it until you run into the Pacific Ocean.

With of population of 250, Troncones (pronounced "tron-CONE-ays") is a true fishing village. Dogs run loose down the dusty coastal road, and kids play in the shade of palm trees. Beat-up pickup trucks bounce along the rutted road, water spilling from the fresh seafood catch of the day.

The tourist business is starting to take hold here, with a handful of bed and breakfasts spread out along the coastline.

One in particular, Casa Delfin Sonriente ("the house of the smiling dolphin") is a pure slice of paradise found. Owner Glen Novey built the six-room beachside house as a family home, but has since turned it into a bed and breakfast. Open just a year now, Glen and partner Jaak Wasmuth offer a unique getaway with all the comforts of home. Activities provided by the place, along with Jaak's Jungle Tours company, include surfing, mountain biking, caving, hiking and just plain hanging out by the pool. As we left Glen after a two-hour mountain bike ride, he was thinking about what to serve his guests for dinner. "Lobster, I think," he said. We hesitated at the gate.

But it was back to Ixtapa, with a vow we'd be back to Troncones.

The coast north of Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo is a goofyfooter's paradise featuring a gaggle of quality left points, quaint rural villages, high-tech nightlife, and hard core surf action at a slew of breaks ranging from gentlemanly to full octane.

I visited there with a group headed up by a Capo Beach clan chieftain who maintains a house at his favorite breaks, yet tried this surf zone last year and has been back three times since. He and his cadre pride themselves in sussing out the best place to be, and then the best way to tap it from a value versus effort standpoint, and once they hit on the answer, they pound it.

Right now this crew has targeted a B&B in the village of Troncones as their area headquarters. The oceanfront Casa Delfin Sonriente ( House of the Smiling Dolphin) is located about 15 miles north of Ixtapa and features squeaky-clean rooms, refreshing pool, complimentary breakfast,and proprietor Glen Novey ( a contractor from Santa Cruz) will put you on the right break for the day, frequently joining in for the go-out.

Accommodations range from $65 a day and up Reservations are a must. Be sure to reserve an air-conditioned Suburban and, oh, yes, all the point breaks have fresh lobster and cold beer joints right at the paddle-out spots.

The Loveliest Beach in Mexico

We stayed at a pleasant bed and breakfast called La Casa Delfin Sonriente - the Smiling Dolphin House. Not, I add, that we witnessed any of the aforementioned creatures said to frolic off the shore. It cost about US$70 a night for a family room with breakfast included, a pretty pool, and a cooler full of beer. All just steps from the beach through a garden filled with butterflies.

It was perfect for us...

The Delfin Sonriente's owner, a friendly Californian surfer and one of the original Troncones pioneers, points out that the added value to the place doesn't stop at the waves, the celebrity spotting and the odd posh restaurant. There are also jungle hikes, caving, mountain biking, diving and bird watching. Not forgetting the more recent proliferation of yoga retreats, and the prevalence of massage tables on the sand's edge complete with ethereal white drapes fluttering in the breeze.

To all of our dear guests and future guests. The idea for the Blog will be both to inform and entertain both new and seasoned travelers to Troncones and Mexico.

Right now the content includes links to a surf report, Mexico Travel site, and local Zihuatenejo weather -- good info yours with a click.

My personal writing focus will be about posting things that I find may be helpful to new travelers and also advice and answers to questions I get. Also I am hoping that some of you will post interesting experiences that would be informative or entertaining related to your Troncones or Casa Delfin Sonriente experiences.

The idea is that Blog will not be a Casa Delfin Guest book or promotion page rather this Blog will be more about your experiences and Troncones and helpful hints about how to have a richer experience. This could be fun for many of you and an opportunity to have your stories read by many people. Others should keep there experiences to themselves. No x rated stuff-- this should be a fairly PG site but I don't want to cramp anyone's style if not necessary.

These postings may be about things as mundane as where to find the potatoes peeler in our kitchen or turn on the BBQ -- especially if the anecdotes are informative and amusing or helpful. Whatever you post I hope readers will enjoy. Keep things positive and if you have something that You wish to communicate but it is critical of our little enterprise please just send me an e-mail note or call. Most all of you who have stayed with us know we really have always strived to be responsive to our guests comments and concerns no matter our faults.

Hope this will be fun for all of us and I look forward to seeing your comments and postings.

7/29/98 -- Glen, thank you for taking good care of me. We've covered so much ground since I've been here. From that first smoke to the snorkeling and surf lesson; from buying, gutting and scaling and preparing local fish to chopping bamboo under sweltering skies. Most of all we've enjoyed relaxing moments, starlight skinny dipping in the pool, electric light show on the roof, cool margaritas at the tropic. What a perfect sunrise, and a perfect start to a much needed honeymoon. Justin and I weren't sure what we were in for as we stopped off at the fallen bridge and began dragging our luggage through the muddy path, soon enough smiling face drives up and us to "the best place on the beach." This is an understatement. Waking up to Carmen's breakfast after sleeping beside the waves and being greeted by a friendly happy face (Jaak) is only a start to a beautiful day in Troncones. Justin and I feel lucky to stay with another pair of "honeymooners." I think we will come back here. Just wanted to let you know we loved staying at casa delfin.
We stayed Tuesday-Thursday last week, then went to nexpa.
We came back to Triconnes on Sunday night kind of late and stopped at delfin.
Nobody was around and we hung with the folks we met earlier in the week.
It got late and we crashed upstairs.
We cleaned up and were out of there at sunrise.
We left 60.00 behind the bar ticket.
The other guest actually talked us into staying.
If 60 dollars doesn't cover the crash, I'd be happy to make things right.
Your place rocks, and I'm hopefully heading back down, on the next strong series of south's with my wife.
We were forced to stay at mant? bay resort our last night, and it did not have that peaceful vibe like the delfin.

Abbie and I (and my brother Barry aka Michael) just wanted to let you know we had a wonderful time staying at Casa Delfin Sonriente. I was amazed at
how clean, organized and well maintained you keep the property. We've never stayed at such a unique and surfer friendly place. I could see that many
hours of love and hard work have gone into the place and your efferts far exceeded our expectations. We didn't want to leave. Abbie and I enjoyed the (huge) Rose Suite and the air conditioning was working fine which Abbie loved. Barry was in his own little world up in the
Papaya Tree Suite and he loved it up there with Alpha keeping him company. We spent a lot of time enjoying that beautiful pool too. Oscar and Lulu helped us every day with anything we needed and really made us feel like one of the family. I wish the world had more guys like Oscar.
Lulu was great at making sure our tanks stayed full with a fresh breakfast each day, I love those pancakes. The surf was up every day and we surfed Saladita each morning and evening. I hope to be back down again this fall for some more waves and if it works out
a stay at your place. Have a great summer, take it easy and thanks again.

Hey Glen. This place is certainly great – except for the sharks nipping at our toes, and the alligators in the pool. Life is good here. We especially enjoyed the unusual creatures – lizards, sand crabs, rock crabs, hermit crabs, boiled crabs, steamed…fried… we have dreams of coming back with 16 of our best friends and having a week get-a-way in this town with a soccer game versus the locals. Next time we come, please fix the gate to keep out the Burros – they are probably still drunk after drinking all of our cerveza! Yup, that’s right! Couldn’t think of a better spot then the Papaya Suite for a honeymoon. We truly loved it here. This place is so beautifully kept with such wonderful people. 06/2006 – Our surf trip to Mexico was so awesome. The waves were great, the accommodations perfect, the food… too good and we ate too much. Our home base here made the trip the best though. A dip in the pool after a morning session, a game of cards, a nap in the hammock, a game of horseshoes, the friendly pets, all helped us forget our normally stressed world and live in paradise for a week.
